China’s Belt and Road Initiative is an ambitious and multifaceted strategy aimed at boosting the flow of trade, capital and services between China and the rest of the word.This plan by the Chinese government shows China’s determination to see economic development embrace the entire Eurasian continent, not just the East and West.OBOR, even if the expressed benefits are not fully realized, is a revolutionary development in global commerce and will shift the world economic focus from the West(Europe/US driven centric)to Asia oriented, but beneficial to the rest of the world.One of its potential indirect benefits is to bring peace and cooperation among member nations.History shows that nations that traded together hardly went to wars.Just a short list of obvious pluses:
Open up trades to landlocked nations as they will be able to bring their goods to the global market, not just trade locally.This is very sweeping for these nations as their wealth of naturally resources can be transported economically.Traveling among Asia, Middle East, and Europe will no longer rely on air transportation alone.The modern rail systems will allow travel from the furthest points, like Shanghai to London in a matter of a couple of days.Air transport will not scale to meet future demands, as crowded airports are obvious evidence.Even for developed countries, the benefits are enormous.Using modern e-commerce technology and this newly affordable transportation network, it will be feasible to buy/sell among countries that are now cost prohibitive, transportation wise.Just imagine that everyone will be able to order off the web globally as easy as they do now at Amazon, Alibaba, and JD and have the items shipped to them as fast as domestic providers.Like the ancient silk road, countries that are denied markets today will be on center stage as the transport routes are at their front door.Their citizens will have opportunities that they can never dream of.As any changes, and this one has tremendous global implication, there will be obvious winners and some perceived themselves being at the wrong side of the equation.I’m referring to India and the USA.India for political reasons against Pakistan.However, this should be resolved in some other ways, because sitting out will hurt India more than anybody else.As for the US, it is seeing this as another way of losing its influence, but not joining will accelerate that even more, as others will see the US being less important as they will be doing fine among themselves.Well, China, the sponsor, never opposes anyone from joining.Let’s hope Trump will see things differently and Modi, too, and change their minds.There are so many positives to list, but these are the top ones.
