        剛剛讀完狄更斯的《艱難時(shí)世》,一個(gè)很強(qiáng)的沖動(dòng)就是想寫篇《狄更斯筆下的女性》。

        狄更斯的確是塑造女性角色的非凡能手。只要打開(kāi)狄更斯的任何一部小說(shuō)都不難得出這個(gè)結(jié)論。在《艱難時(shí)世》中,我統(tǒng)計(jì)了一下,出場(chǎng)的女性有西絲、露意莎、瑞茄、斯巴塞太太以及露面不多的葛擂硬太太和派格拉太太等人。這里的每個(gè)女性都被狄更斯賦予了鮮明的色彩和個(gè)性。她們的年齡不同、想法不同、處事方式不同、說(shuō)話的語(yǔ)氣和目的不同,都在狄更斯筆下活靈活現(xiàn)地得以展現(xiàn)。

        這僅僅還只是狄更斯十四部長(zhǎng)篇小說(shuō)中的一部小說(shuō)。

        很難再看到還有另外一位作家能做到這點(diǎn)。至少,我沒(méi)有在我的閱讀范圍內(nèi)看到還有另一位能塑造如此之多的女性性格的作家。――寫到這句,我忽然想起巴爾扎克,巴爾扎克也塑造了很多女性形象,但像歐也妮那樣令人難忘的女性卻不是很多。至少,狄更斯在這方面給我的印象極為突出,尤其是讀了這本《艱難時(shí)世》之后。

        而且,和其他作家不同,仍譬如巴爾扎克,巴爾扎克的野心是通過(guò)近百部小說(shuō)創(chuàng)造一個(gè)完全屬于他的世界或社會(huì)。在巴爾扎克那里,社會(huì)發(fā)展規(guī)律在《人間喜劇》中起到的是首屈一指的作用,狄更斯卻完全是依靠對(duì)人物性格的演變來(lái)作為他小說(shuō)的推動(dòng)杠桿。這是截然不同的創(chuàng)作方向。二者都有魅力,二者的魅力都難分高下。

        所有成功作家都有他之所以成功之處。狄更斯的成功之處,我覺(jué)得就是他對(duì)性格的強(qiáng)烈塑造,超越了他同時(shí)代的任何一個(gè)。

        在狄更斯的長(zhǎng)篇小說(shuō)中,《艱難時(shí)世》算是篇幅較短的一部。篇幅考驗(yàn)的是結(jié)構(gòu)。就這部小說(shuō)而言,我感覺(jué)是狄更斯結(jié)構(gòu)最為簡(jiǎn)潔明快的一部小說(shuō)。從葛擂硬的出場(chǎng)、西絲父親的出走、龐得貝與露意莎的結(jié)婚、斯梯芬與瑞茄難以言說(shuō)的愛(ài)戀、赫德豪士對(duì)露意莎的勾引、斯巴塞太太的雨夜追蹤,到最后湯姆的盜竊罪暴露等等一系列情節(jié),都以相當(dāng)明快的筆法勾勒出來(lái)。每個(gè)細(xì)節(jié)都對(duì)應(yīng)后來(lái)的事件,不僅給人閱讀的快感,更令人驚訝于狄更斯筆法的開(kāi)闊與細(xì)膩。而且,當(dāng)小說(shuō)塵埃落定之時(shí),令人覺(jué)得處處都出人意料,處處又都合情合理。

        小說(shuō)譯本(1978年上海譯文版)有篇前言,里面談到葛擂硬是如何如何沒(méi)有人性,如何如何剝削工人,如何如何與龐得貝狼狽為奸等等。但實(shí)際上,我對(duì)葛擂硬很有好感。首先,他是一個(gè)原則性很強(qiáng)的人,像他那樣堅(jiān)持原則的人十分罕見(jiàn),特別是在我們這個(gè)目迷五色的今天,原則幾乎變成笑料。葛擂硬的原則最后在父子親情面前瓦解,證實(shí)的也無(wú)非是情感的力量,從中我看到的是葛擂硬極為真實(shí)的人性。他讓露意莎嫁給龐得貝,難道就真的值得去指責(zé)嗎?作為一個(gè)父親,他首先希望的是女兒能過(guò)上好的生活。露意莎的婚后失意,難道真的應(yīng)歸咎到葛擂硬身上嗎?當(dāng)露意莎逃回他身邊時(shí),葛擂硬展現(xiàn)的也同樣是父愛(ài)柔情。當(dāng)畢周威脅他要抓回湯姆時(shí),葛擂硬為了兒子,不惜向這個(gè)從前的學(xué)生低頭。讀到這里時(shí),我是很感動(dòng)的。對(duì)很多古典名著,中譯本的不少序言都喜歡以政治方式來(lái)解讀(也許是當(dāng)時(shí)的迫不得已?),但我們不能忘記的是,狄更斯所寫的絕非政治小說(shuō),他關(guān)心的是人,是人的命運(yùn);狄更斯也絕非政治家,而是一個(gè)小說(shuō)家,一個(gè)很偉大的天才小說(shuō)家。
