        And before I get started today, on behalf of myself and my husband, I just want to say a few very brief words above Malaysian(sic)Airline Flight 370.As my husband has said, theUnited Statesis offering as many resources as possible to assist in the search。

        And please know that we are keeping all the families and loved ones of those on this flight in our thoughts and prayers at this very difficult time。

        Baucus…President Wang…Chairman Zhu…Vice President Li.Director Cueller, Professor Oi and the Stanford center…President Sexton from New York University which has an excellent study abroad program in Shanghai…and John Thorton, Director of the Global Leadership Program at Tsinghua University…thank you all so much for joining us。

        And most of all, I want to thank all of the student for being here today…and I particulary want to thank Eric Schafer and Zhu Xuanbao for that extraordinary English and Chinese introduction。That was such a powerful symbol of everything I want to talk with you about today。

        You see, by learning each other’s languagesMr.Schafer and Ms.Zhu and all of you are building bridges of understanding that lead to so much more。

        And I’m here today because I know that our future depends on connections like these among your people like you across the globe。

        That’s why when my husband and I travel abroad, we don't just visit palaces and parliament and meet with heads of state。

        We also come to schools like this one to meet with students like you。

        Because we believe that relationships between nations are not just about relationship between governments or leaders…they’re about relationships between people, particularly our young people。So we view study abroad programs not just as an educational opportunity f or students…but also as a vital part ofAmerica’s foreign policy。

        You see, through the wonders of modern technology, our world is more connected than ever before。

        Ideas can cross ocean with the click of a button。

        Companies can do business and complete with companies across the globe。

        And we can text, email and skype with people on every continent。

        So studying abroad isn’t just a fun way to spend a semester-it’s quickly becoming the key to success in our global economy。

        Because getting ahead in today’s workplaces isn’t just about getting good grades or test scores in school…it’s also about having real experience with the world beyond your bordersit’s also about shaping the future of your countries and of the world we all share。

        Because when it comes to the defining challenges of our timeyou do it by improving yourself in someone’s culture…by learning each other’s stories…and by getting past the stereotypes and misconceptions that too often divide us。

        That’s how you come to understand how much we all share。

        And that’s how you realize that we all have a stake in each other’s successbecause I want young people inAmericato be part of this visit。

        That’s really the power of technologyby questioning and debating them vigorously…by listening to all sides of every argument...and by judging for ourselves。And believe me, I know this can be a messy and frustrating process。

        My husband and I are on the receiving and of plenty of questioning and criticizing from our media and our fellow citizens...and it’s not always easy...but we wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world。Because time and again, we have seen that countries are stronger and more prosperous when the voices and opinions of all their citizens can be heard。

        And as my husband said, we respect the uniqueness of other cultures and societies。

        But when it comes to expressing yourself freely, and worshipping as your choose, and having open access to information – we believe those are universal rights that are the birthright of every person on this planet。

        We believe that all people deserve the opportunity to fulfill their highest potential as I was able to do in theUnited States。

        And as you learn about new cultures and form new friendships during your time here in China and in the United States, all of you are the living, breathing embodiment of those values。

        So I guarantee you that in studying abroad, you’re not just changing your own life…you’re changing the lives of everyone you meet。

        As the great American President John F.Kennedy once said about foreign students studying in theU.S., ―I think they teach more than they learn?!?/p>

        And that is just as true of young Americans who study abroad。

        All of you are America’s best face, and China’s best face, to the world。

        Every day, you show the world your countries’ energy, creativity, optimism and unwavering belief in the future。

        And every day, you remind us of just how much we can achieve if we reach across borders…and learn to see ourselves in each other…and confront our shared challenges with shared resolve。So I hope you will keep seeking these kinds of experiences。

        And I hope you’ll keep teaching each other…and learning from each other…and building bonds of friendship that will enrich your lives and enrich our world for decades to come。

        這是你們與室友、實驗伙伴建立起的聯(lián)系能帶來更多收獲的時候。阿比蓋爾·柯普林(Abigail Coplin)成為北京大學[微博]美國富布賴特學者(American Fullbright Scholar)的時候,她與同事們在首屈一指的科學雜志上共同發(fā)表論文,建立研究伙伴關系,這段關系在他們各自回國后還長久持續(xù)著。

        這確實是技術的力量——它打開整個世界,讓我們接觸到以前根本難以想象的思想和創(chuàng)新。這也是為什么信息和思想在互聯(lián)網(wǎng)上、并通過媒體自由流動是如此重要。

        如馨是怎樣學英語的

        如馨正式學英語是在兩年前,確切地說是從XX年3月。當時如馨同媽媽一起去英國看爸爸,這就意味著如馨不得不學英語。當時連26個字母都背不下來的她,開始時有些抵觸情緒。她就讀于一所很不錯的小學,上四年級(year four)。那里的同學和老師對她都很熱情和友好,這增強了她的自信心。媽媽給如馨指定了一套系統(tǒng)的學習計劃。在第一個月里,如馨掌握了基本的課堂用語和生活用語,并且還掌握了200多個單詞。這些單詞是按內(nèi)容進行歸類,這樣比較容易記。每天放學回家還要看一些動畫片。一開始看不懂,她就會根據(jù)片中人物表情和手勢去猜。

        hi, everyone, my name is jia ruxin. i am from shijiazhuang and in grade 5. today my topic is “ my sweet home”.

        i’ve got a sweet home because it is full of love. my dad loves me. he is kind and patient. it is my dad who watches outlook english magazine with me; it is also my dad who is ready to answer my questions. my mom loves me, too. she is considerate and hardworking. every day when i go home from school, the rooms are always clean and tidy. every time when i play out and forget dinnertime, it is also my mom who calls me back with her tender voice, “come home, my little darling, dinner is ready”.

        大家好!我叫賈如馨。我來自石家莊,是五年級的學生。今天我演講的題目是:我甜美的家。

        俗話說:“東好西好不如家好?!睆倪@句話我們可以體會到家對每一個人是多么的重要。我有一個甜美的家,因為我的家既舒適又安逸。我們住的是單元樓房。客廳是最大的一間。我的房間是最小的,但這里是我自己的天地:潔白的墻壁,精美的窗簾,溫暖舒服的床和裝滿各種書籍的書架;在屋子的右手方向放著古箏,一種傳統(tǒng)的中國樂器;在桌子上則有一臺電腦。當我感到疲勞的時候,可以玩一會兒電腦;而彈奏古箏可以使我擺脫消沉。這就是我甜美的家,在這里我可以找到寧靜和舒適。

        我有一個甜美的家,因為它充滿了愛。爸爸疼愛我。他既和藹又有耐心。陪我一起看希望英語雜志的是我的爸爸,隨時回答我提出的各種問題的也是我的爸爸。我的媽媽也愛我。她不僅考慮周到而且不辭辛勞。每天當我放學回到家里,房間總是既干凈又整齊。每當我在外玩耍而忘記吃晚飯時間時,也是我的母親用她那溫柔的聲音叫我:“寶貝兒,晚飯已經(jīng)好了,快回家吃飯吧!”

        這就是我的家,我甜美的家。

        四、賽后感想

        中央電視臺第四屆“希望之星”英語風采大賽結(jié)束了,但我的心情卻久久不能平靜。比賽中所有的參賽選手都一展才華,顯示出很強的英語水平。雖然我獲得了小學組的冠軍,但是我還有很多不足之處需要彌補。

        通過這次比賽我收獲了很多。它豐富了我的人生經(jīng)歷。它使我結(jié)識了許多來自全國各地的小朋友。它給了我一次很好的學習機會。它讓我大開了眼界,增長了見識。最重要的一點,它讓我的自信心和心理素質(zhì)得到了很大的提高。得到了冠軍并不是我一人的功勞,它包含著許多人的汗水。我和爸爸媽媽付出了,為了這次比賽我們準備了很多。在中央電視臺的工作的叔叔阿姨們也付出了許多,是他們在幕后籌備著一切,是他們一直鼓勵著我們,他們才是真正的幕后英雄,他們才是最可愛的人!

        我要把這比賽的經(jīng)歷作為一個起點,繼續(xù)努力!

        Ambition

        It is not difficult to imagine a world short of ambition. It would probably be a kinder world: with out demands, without abrasions, without disappointments. People would have time for reflection. Such work as they did would not be for themselves but for the collectivity.         Ah, how unrelieved boring life would be!

        There is a strong view that holds that success is a myth, and ambition therefore a sham. Does this mean that success does not really exist? That achievement is at bottom empty? That the efforts of men and women are of no significance alongside the force of movements and events now not all success, obviously, is worth esteeming, nor all ambition worth cultivating. Which are and which are not is something one soon enough learns on one’s own. But even the most cynical secretly admit that success exists; that achievement counts for a great deal; and that the true myth is that the actions of men and women are useless. To believe otherwise is to take on a point of view that is likely to be deranging. It is, in its implications, to remove all motives for competence, interest in attainment, and regard for posterity.

        We do not choose to be born. We do not choose our parents. We do not choose our historical epoch, the country of our birth, or the immediate circumstances of our upbringing. We do not, most of us, choose to die; nor do we choose the time or conditions of our death. But within all this realm of choicelessness, we do choose how we shall live: courageously or in cowardice, honorably or dishonorably, with purpose or in drift. We decide what is important and what is trivial in life. We decide that what makes us significant is either what we do or what we refuse to do. But no matter how indifferent the universe may be to our choices and decisions, these choices and decisions are ours to make. We decide. We choose. And as we decide and choose, so are our lives formed. In the end, forming our own destiny is what ambition is about.
