下面我們將到達(dá)的是犀牛潭，它位于瀑布腳下，水深17.7米，這里是瀑布的跌落處，傳說(shuō)遠(yuǎn)古時(shí)代，此地有神犀出沒，因而得名。從這里仰望瀑布，又是另外一番驚心動(dòng)魄的感覺，要是遇到艷陽(yáng)高照的時(shí)候，潭中常升騰起一道才彩虹，無(wú)比的壯觀。在瀑布對(duì)面的觀瀑亭上有這樣一幅楹聯(lián)恰如其分地描述了這一景致：白水如棉，不用弓彈花自散;紅霞似錦，何須梭織天生成。

黃果樹瀑布為什么會(huì)這樣呢?這是因?yàn)辄S果樹瀑布地處喀斯特地區(qū)，是由水流的侵蝕作用造成的。當(dāng)溯源侵蝕裂點(diǎn)到達(dá)上游時(shí)，河水沿著喀斯特裂隙沖刷、溶蝕、沖蝕、磨蝕，管道逐漸擴(kuò)大，形成落不洞及地下河;當(dāng)?shù)乇砗幼⑷肼渌春笏康谋壤饾u增大，就形成了喀斯特地區(qū)特有的襲奪，在明流注入落水洞處，就形成落水洞式瀑布。隨著水流沖蝕及策略崩塌作用不斷加劇，暗河洞穴越來(lái)越大，于是沿地表干谷發(fā)育了成串分布的豎井及天窗，它們不斷擴(kuò)大，歸并，垮塌，就造成了現(xiàn)今雄偉壯觀的黃果樹大瀑布和瀑布下游深切險(xiǎn)峻的峽谷?，F(xiàn)在大家自由活動(dòng)，20分鐘后到扶梯下集合。
