西塘地勢(shì)平坦，河流密布，自然環(huán)境十分幽靜。有9條河道在鎮(zhèn)區(qū)交匯，把鎮(zhèn)區(qū)分劃成8個(gè)板塊，而眾多的橋梁又把水鄉(xiāng)連成一體。古稱"九龍捧珠"、"八面來風(fēng)".古鎮(zhèn)區(qū)內(nèi)有保存完好的明清建筑群多處，具有較高的藝術(shù)性和研究?jī)r(jià)值，為國(guó)內(nèi)外研究古建筑的專家學(xué)者所矚目。鳥瞰全鎮(zhèn)，薄霧似紗，兩岸粉墻高聳，瓦屋倒影。傍晚，夕陽斜照，漁舟唱晚，燈火閃耀，酒香飄溢，整座水鄉(xiāng)古鎮(zhèn)似詩(shī)如畫，人處其間，恍然桃源瓊瑤，不知是人在畫中游，還是畫在心中移。這是一座千年古鎮(zhèn)。古鎮(zhèn)在春夏秋冬、晴陰雨雪的長(zhǎng)久年代里，始終呈現(xiàn)著一幅"人家在水中，水上架小橋，橋上行人走，小舟行橋下，橋頭立商鋪，水中有倒影"的不斷變幻的水鄉(xiāng)風(fēng)情畫。
西塘坐落在水之中，這里的居民惜土如金，無論是商號(hào)或是民居、館舍，在建造時(shí)對(duì)面積都寸寸計(jì)較，房屋之間的空距壓縮到最小范圍，由此形成了120多條長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的、深而窄的弄堂，長(zhǎng)的超過百米，窄的不到1米，形成了多處"一線天".與此同時(shí)，街道弄堂的名稱均形象地體現(xiàn)出古鎮(zhèn)商貿(mào)的繁榮和弄堂的特色，如米行埭、燈燭街、油車弄、柴炭弄、石皮弄等數(shù)十個(gè)稱號(hào)與當(dāng)年的商貿(mào)、建筑等都有直接的聯(lián)系。
到了西塘，臨河而建的沿街廊棚最為引人，這里的街道臨河而建，商鋪的生意就在河邊做成。往昔，水鄉(xiāng)農(nóng)家的出行以河為道，以舟代步，許多交易只能在船上岸邊進(jìn)行，為此，一種連接河道與店鋪又可遮陽避雨的特殊建筑廊棚便應(yīng)運(yùn)而生，并代代傳承，相沿成習(xí)。實(shí)用的廊棚是水鄉(xiāng)特有的建筑，西塘至今保存著1300多米長(zhǎng)的廊棚已變成當(dāng)代人賞古、探幽的.休閑一餐。
西塘是個(gè)平民化的小鎮(zhèn)，所有一切都如此樸素，沒有周莊的繁華，沒有南潯的富甲之態(tài)，沒有濃厚的商業(yè)氛圍！但是西塘的獨(dú)特魅力令留宿旅者陶醉！20xx年中國(guó)旅**業(yè)第一份"中國(guó)旅游百?gòu)?qiáng)景區(qū)"名單上，西塘景區(qū)以年接待269萬人次的成績(jī)位列排行榜第38位。
傳說典故
鎮(zhèn)名由來
版本一：相傳春秋時(shí)期吳國(guó)伍子胥興水利，通鹽運(yùn)，開鑿伍子塘，引胥山（現(xiàn)嘉善縣西南12里）以北之水直抵境內(nèi)，故西塘亦稱胥塘。因西塘地勢(shì)平坦，一馬平川，又別稱平川，斜塘。
版本二：西塘鎮(zhèn)域東北有一個(gè)3400畝面積的湖蕩，那是嘉善縣境內(nèi)最大的湖泊之一。
傳說北宋真宗大中祥符年間，有一戶姓唐的大戶人家遷到蕩邊居住，他們看到這個(gè)湖蕩風(fēng)景秀麗，盛產(chǎn)翠鳥和紅菱，這兩物為吉祥之物，又恰在祥符年間，就以"祥符"兩字稱呼這個(gè)湖蕩。
這戶唐姓人家，有弟兄兩人，在祥符蕩邊樂悠悠生活，后來分了家。兄居蕩東邊，人稱東唐，弟居蕩的西邊，人稱西唐。后來哥哥這一房逐漸衰落，弟弟這一房，小輩十分興旺，就象一棵樹，生出許許多多樹、枝，所以，人們把他們居住的地方，在"唐"字邊上加個(gè)土，叫做西塘。
廊棚由來
在江南水鄉(xiāng)，分散的、幾戶合一的廊街隨處可見，然而，廊街長(zhǎng)達(dá)1300多米的，惟有西塘。西塘的廊街，一邊是商店或民居，另一邊是河，廊街都有小河緊貼著，彎彎曲曲，情調(diào)非常。步入廊街，映入眼簾的是兩岸水上人家和前呼后應(yīng)的河埠。如逢雨天，雨水在廊檐口滴滴嗒嗒形成一道長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的雨簾，就是不會(huì)做詩(shī)的人也會(huì)頓時(shí)詩(shī)意滿腔。關(guān)于廊街的由來，沒有官方的記載，只有民間流傳的"為郎而蓋"和"行善而搭"兩個(gè)版本。
版本之一：年輕的寡婦胡氏，在西塘獨(dú)自支撐著一家老小和一個(gè)鋪?zhàn)?。胡家鋪前的河灘邊，有一個(gè)擺豆腐攤的王二。王二同情胡氏，常幫著做一些體力活。日子一久，胡氏便覺得離不開王二，但又難以啟齒表達(dá)這份感情，便煞費(fèi)苦心地借修繕店鋪之機(jī)，請(qǐng)人沿河建起了棚屋，將店鋪前的街路遮蓋了起來。這么一來，王二既可免受風(fēng)吹雨淋，兩人也可同在一個(gè)屋檐下。不想胡家鋪?zhàn)右蛄诉@棚屋而生意一下子紅火起來。鎮(zhèn)上商家紛紛效仿，幾年來，棚屋連成了一線。后人就取"為郎而蓋"之意，將棚屋叫做廊街了。
